Frequently Asked Questions

What do the programs cost?

  • All State Library education programs are provided free of charge.
  • All equipment and materials costs are covered by the State Library.

What pre-visit information will we receive?

  • An email will be sent to the booking contact person to be distributed to all the attending teachers and adults. This will include all pre-visit information relevant to the booked program.
  • Some early years or primary programs will also receive a posted invitation addressed to the children.

What happens on arrival?

  • Arrive prior to the start of the program, so that students can eat and access toilet facilities located on the ground floor behind the lift.
  • If the weather is inclement a shelter area is located on the eastern side of the building between the State Library and the Museum’s armoury building.
  • A staff member will meet your group near the main entrance.

What should we bring to an education program?

  • Medication may be carried by the adult supervisor in a backpack.
  • Please arrange name tags for early years and primary students.
  • Devices are provided by the State Library, but we encourage senior secondary students to BYO devices.
  • Students who wish to join the State Library and receive a library card need to do so before visiting the library and request the card to be mailed to them.
  • Students wishing to access photocopying services will need to bring money.
  • Storage is available to accommodate school bags or food/drink crates.

Do you have teacher tips for visiting the State Library for research?

  • Discuss research topics with your students and the types of resources that might be useful.
  • Students may wish to access a Library Guide relevant to research topics.
  • Involve the school librarian in your students' research projects.
  • Allocate sufficient time at the State Library for your research.
  • Some collection items are in storage but you can request an item to be retrieved from storage via the catalogue before your visit. Find out more about the retrieval service.
  • If you are intending to stay to use the resources after your program, you will need to book electronic database computers for your students to use.

 

Plan your visit

How do I get to the State Library by public transport?

The 'State Library, Art Gallery, Museum' tram-stop is just outside the State Library. There are bus stops close by near the War Memorial on North Terrace. The closest train station is the Adelaide city station on North Terrace.

You can plan your journey via Adelaide Metro.

Is there car parking near the State Library?

The nearest car park is Wilson's Adelaide Central car park, 225 North Terrace, next to David Jones.

There is paid metered street parking along Kintore Ave and Victoria Drive.

Where is the wheelchair and stroller access?

Access to the Spence Wing first floor and the Mortlock Wing is via the lift in the glass foyer entrance of the library.

Access to the Institute Building is via the external ramp on the Kintore Ave entrance or via the internal ramp between the Institute Building and the Spence Wing (opposite the Treasures Wall).

How do I check if the Mortlock Chamber is open when I plan to visit?

The Mortlock Wing and Treasures Wall are venues for hire and subject to occasional closures due to functions and special events, please check our Open Hours for any venue closures on the day of your tour to avoid disappointment.

Is there a cafe at the State Library?

There is a cafe located in the back of the glass foyer at the State Library. View more information about the cafe and tenants.

 

Booking into programs

What is Eventbrite?

At the State Library we use Eventbrite for our event and program registrations. When you register for an event or program, you will be asked to provide your name and email address. Eventbrite will then prompt you to create a password so that you can manage your bookings. For information about what happens to your contact details please view our privacy statement.

How do I book into an event, tour or program?

Find the event, tour or program you would like to book. On the page about the event, tour or program you will notice a yellow button called 'Book now' as well as registration cart on the page. 

Choose the number of tickets you need then follow the prompts by filling in your details. We use Eventbrite at the State Library for our event and education programs.

I can’t attend the event, how do I cancel my registration?

You will need to cancel your registration via Eventbrite by logging in to your account.
